The Long Shadow of Spengler
Is Oswald Spengler a Prophet? I don’t mean in the profane way “Prophet” is used now to apply to every Tom, Dick, and Harry that guesses that rain will fall tomorrow. I mean in the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah decrying our fall for the sins of our Fathers type of Prophet. One sent to Earth by whichever form the dear reader believes to whom “God” refers. He certainly speaks like one. This will happen! This cycle will occur! Most famously, Decline of the West begins claiming itself as an attempt to predetermine History. Not in itself religious until one realizes History is the dominant faith of the West, successor to the faith of Christ and companion to the Faith of Power.
Indeed, this leaves one asking if this is the folly of Spengler’s Faustian man? We believe ourselves above the gods, nay, above God! Simultaneously, and one might say, contradictorily, we believe ourselves capable of conquering the gods. In other words, we self-deify while fantasizing about committing deicide! No wonder so many of us yearn to end our own lives; when all gods save one have been slain, what other course is there but to slay the final god – Yourself? Such is the consequence of the Western Will-to-Infinity, which in and of itself is the Will-to-Call-Thyself-God.
But the Faustian man’s greatest mistake is thus: In their rape of God’s order while wearing their self-constructed mask of said God, they came to believe the mask was the face and they were immune to the consequences of their violation of fate. I believe the past seventy-six years to have been a lesson that even the West is not exempt from God’s order.
This brings us back to Spengler’s cycle, which will not be elaborated upon as to not insult the intelligence of the dear reader. The big hand of the Spengler clock is in Winter, the little hand has just passed “Politics of Money” and now falls in “Politics of Blood.”
Spengler’s contention of the Politics of Blood beating the Politics of Money came true in the post-war world, but in a Faustian guise: the Politics of Blood would claim to shed no blood, nay, it would stand entirely to stop all shedding of blood! No matter how much blood was shed in the process, of course. Even today, our Caesars whose names we no longer know shed more blood than ever seen in human history, all while claiming no blood has been shed at all. When Spengler made the contention, he meant it as a prayer. He was beseeching God to spare the West its fate. God appears to have been no kinder to our wayward culture than any of its predecessors.
The talk of blood was, interestingly, never spoken of at length by Spengler. Despite being known far and wide for his propensity of speaking at length. He speaks of the soul, the Faustian Soul, the Magian Soul, even the organism when not referred to as “High-Culture” is instead referred to as “Culture-Soul.” While this may have been plenty good for Oswald Spengler: Completor of the System of German Idealism, for materialist Westerners such as ourselves it’s woefully insufficient.
Luckily for us, Spengler’s near-universally acknowledged successor (at least among the right but not I,) Francis Parker Yockey, speaks at length where his master did not. Allow us to take leave of our foray into Spengler Science, and instead, look to the ideas of his successor.
Metaphysical / Material Distinction
To Francis Parker Yockey, as well as his contemporary, Julius Evola, “Race” (The race that Apartheid and CRT are based upon, Yockey refers to the concept differently) is two different conceptions:
● Material, i.e. Biological. “Bean Counting Skull Sizes” in the 19th Century, or its 21st Century Equivalent, “Bean Counting DNA strands”
● Metaphysical, i.e. Spiritual. Otherworldly. Of a higher plane. Of God. Divinely Ordained.
This will be henceforth referred to as the Material/Metaphysical distinction. To those familiar with Evola, this is not a stark comparison. The idea of race being a product of metaphysics is present in The Myth of the Blood, Synthesis of the Doctrine of Race, and The Elements of Racial Education. Yockey almost certainly read all three, and while they influenced his worldview, he speaks of race in a different manner while retaining the same truths.
The succession of human generations, related by blood, have the clear tendency to remain fixed in a landscape… Within this landscape the forms of plant and animal life have local characteristics, different from transplantations of the same strains and stocks in other landscapes.
This idea, which Yockey refers to as “Stocks,” is the idea of material race as was outlined above. Yockey elaborates on the material side further,
Some of the totality of human characteristics are soil-determined, others are stock-determined. Pigmentation is one of the latter, and survives transplantation to other areas. It is not possible to list all of even the physical characteristics according to such a scheme, for the data has not been gathered.
Race exists in the material world, which Yockey asserts as the truth it is. Yet he concludes the passage thus,
But even so, it would not matter to our purpose, for the most important element also in the objective meaning of race is the spiritual.
Race cannot be understood outside of its dual nature: Material and Metaphysical, which while defined above, can be found in countless dualities even as simple as the Body/Soul distinction common even in the contemporary west.
In reference to the metaphysics of race, especially in terms of understanding the nature of such metaphysics, Yockey says thus,
Some stocks are undoubtedly more highly endowed than others in certain spiritual directions. Spiritual qualities are as diverse as physical qualities. Not only average height of body varies, but also average height of soul. Not only skull-shape and stature are soil-determined, but so must be some spiritual properties.
This passage is key to understanding the nuance of the Material/Metaphysical distinction. Race as is physically expressed, Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid, have different “Ceilings” of spiritual attainment. As Yockey says, “Height of Soul.” This is not determined by biology, yet biology can be viewed as a container for the spiritual.
Consider the following scenarios, “A biologically Caucasian man can be spiritually Negro, or the opposite can be so.” In the former case, Materially White but Metaphysically Black, this can be seen as pouring lemonade to fill a third of a pitcher. I.e., the biology is capable of containing a higher spirit, but this has not occurred for reasons, as Yockey says, “Of which we can know only what, but never how.” In the latter case, Materially Black but Metaphysically White, this can be seen as pouring lemonade into a drinking glass until the glass overflows. I.e., the biology is incapable of containing the size of the spirit, which can result in negative consequences for the individual.
I do not deign to measure the differences and particularities of this system, as I leave that to whichever Bean Counters inevitably turn this truth into a profane science. I will leave the reader with this closing thought: Peoples exist because they have a divinely ordained reason to. I.e., they fulfil a purpose. They do not come about as a result of material factors; the material factors are the means of God (however the reader characterizes him) exerting his will on the material. As above, so below.
To Be of Race
Here we come to a final concept, Yockey’s true meaning when he says “Race.” To Yockey, Race is the faculty of life’s relation to “Great Cosmic Rhythms,” the Metaphysics of the Material/Metaphysical distinction. Thus, Yockey can say,
RACE, as has been shown, is not a unit of existence, but is an aspect of existence.
The four kinds of life, Plant, Animal, Man, Culture Man, have an increasing consciousness and thus an increasing detachment from metaphysical reality. Therefore, Race as Yockey describes, could refer to what the spiritually minded call “Intuition,” i.e. compelling thoughts not of the nature of the intellect. The duality is described as such,
Each individual, as well as each higher organic unit, has these two aspects. Race impels toward self-preservation, continuance of the cycle of generations, increase of power. Intellect decides the meaning of the Life, and the aim, and this may, for various reasons, deny one or all of these fundamental urges.
Race in this context can be interpreted as the intersection of instinct and intuition, intellect is the denial of both which finds its source in consciousness. The relation of such can only be understood by the reintroduction of the Spenglerian High Culture.
The Spenglerian High Culture, populated by Culture-Man, is the form of life applied to anyone and everyone reading this article. It’s also the form of life applied to a Roman Legionary, an Egyptian Scribe, an Indian Guru, an Arab Merchant, etc. This is above man in the Hobbesian “State of Nature,” where a man acts no different from other animals of prey – with just a dash of pre-consciousness added. The interaction between Race and High Culture is stated by Yockey as such,
The celibacy of the priest and the sterility of the libertine both come from intellect, but one of them is an expression of High Culture, and the other is the denial of Culture, an expression of total degeneracy. Intellect may thus be in the service of Culture, or opposed to it.
It is not to say that Race is only instinct, on the contrary,
Race in the subjective sense is thus seen to be a matter of instinct. The man with strong instincts has race, the man with weak or bad instincts has it not. Strength of intellect has nothing to do with the existence of race— it may merely, in some cases, such as that of the man who takes a vow of celibacy— influence the expression of a part of race. Strong intellect and strong instincts can co-exist— think of the Gothic bishops who led their flocks to war— they are merely opposed directions of thought and action, but it is the instincts that furnish the driving force for great intellectual accomplishments also.
Intellect is a tool to be used to fulfil an aspect of cultural expression. In the Spenglerian transition from Culture to Civilization, the Intellect becomes dominant over Instinct in expression if not in form. Hence the Carlyleian “Counting Mania” and “Dismal Science,” a frenzy of facts and statistics becoming the dominant and degrading expressions of one’s outer life if not one with Race’s inner life. In the case of those without race, this was always their inner-life, yet the corset of Culture has been removed, and they’re justified and given free rein by the culture to fill their stomachs by any means necessary.
This is where elite theory can be introduced, as Yockey’s assertion fits within the logical conception of Pareto. Except Yockey goes a step further, claiming not only a biological difference between what he goes on to call, “Men of Race” and men without it,
A man of race is not born to slavery. If his intellect counsel him to a temporary submission, rather than an heroic death, in the hope of future changes, it is a mere postponement of his breaking out. The man without race will submit permanently to any humiliation, any insult, any dishonor, so long as he is permitted to live. The continuance of breathing and digestion are Life to the man without race. To the man of race, Life itself represents no value, but only Life under the right conditions, affirmative Life, rich, expressive and growing.
Countless terms have come about to describe men without race: Normies, NPCs, the masses, cattle, sheep. Yockey has a few of his own, most notably “Underworld.” Bronze Age Pervert’s own “Yeast Life” equally applies here, that life which only lives to fill its stomach. Men with any higher purpose whatever can be considered Men of Race.
As Nietzsche spoke of the Übermensch, the man of a higher purpose, nature, and being, Yockey says the same,
But the man who dies for something higher shows that he has race, regardless of his intellectualized motives. For Race is the faculty of being true to one’s self. It is the placing of a beyond-value on one’s own individual soul.
Should you have read this far and understood the contents, you are of Race. Even should you question such on any biological grounds, merely look to the following,
In this subjective sense, Race is not the way one talks, looks, gestures, walks, it is not a matter of stock, color, anatomy, skeletal structure, or anything else objective. Men of Race are scattered through all populations everywhere, through all races, peoples, nations. In each unit they make up the warriors, the leaders of action, the creators in the sphere of politics and war.
It is in this sense, that we can boil down Yockey’s idea of Race to the following: that which is exceptional among human stock.
What This Means For Our Thing
The Globalist Elite, whatever Racial or Spiritual form it takes, can be characterized as the revolt of a dead form: a Kakistocracy of the worst Men without Race. We struggle not to defeat the men behind this revolt, but the inertia that carries them forward. They are doomed to fail, to fall, to collapse, but so is an avalanche. And I fear to say many of us will perish before the momentum is exhausted. Yet I believe one passage of Yockey clarifies our purpose and our mission,
This quality of having race has, obviously, no connection with which race one feels community. Race in the objective sense is a creation of history. One’s destiny must express itself within a certain framework— the framework of Fate. Thus a man of race born in Kirghizia belongs by Fate to the barbarian world of Asia with its historical mission of destruction of the Western Civilization.
Yet as I said at the beginning of the article, the West brought ruin upon itself like every preceding High Culture, going against God’s Order with our fantasies of deicide. To the men of Race, orphaned sons of what was once the West, I pose the following.
What if the Faustian Imperium is Globohomo? And what if the Caesar we’re waiting for came long ago? Accepting these questions as truth, then the West died with the coming of our Caesar. Therefore, if the West is a dead culture, what is there to preserve but a corpse?
Our thing should ask itself whether it wants to preserve Western Culture in its putrid rotting form or use the forms of the West to bring about the next High Culture.
